In Indiana, low-income inventors may qualify for free patent help. The IP clinic at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law is certified by the USPTO to provide assistance to clients who need patent legal services. In addition, the clinic offers experiential learning opportunities for qualified law students.
\nInventors from low-income groups can get free legal support and assistance in filing their patent applications. There are two ways to apply: through the Inventor Assistance Program (IAP) of LegalCORPS, or through a lawyer or law firm who is willing to donate their time.
\nTo qualify for free legal help, inventors must have a patentable idea and earn less than twice the federal poverty level. The inventor must take online patent-related training, complete a search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s database, and pay for all other expenses except for legal fees.
\nThe IP Clinic at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney school of law provides students with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities related to patent and trademark law. Working with pro bono clients, faculty from Indiana Law’s Center for Intellectual Property Research, and the USPTO, students sharpen their research, advocacy, and administrative practice skills. They develop and implement strategies to meet the needs of clients. The experience is invaluable, not to mention that these students gain valuable experience in IP practice.
\nIU McKinney is located on the IUPUI campus. In addition, students can enroll in the school’s full-time and part-time law programs. The campus features over 30 student organizations, including the Animal Law Society, Asian Law Students Association, Black Law Students Association, Equal Justice Works, Health Law Society, Lambda Law Society, Sports and Entertainment Law Society, and Women in Law Society. The school also hosts a formal dinner dance, the Barrister’s Ball. Past events have been held at the Indiana Roof Ballroom, Scottish Rite Temple, and Marion County Public Library Main Branch.
\nThe IP clinic at IU McKinney School of Law is a place for students to learn about the latest innovations in IP law. The clinic organizes workshops and seminars on global crisis management, and sponsors a biennial counterterrorism simulation exercise where students and experts collaborate to respond to a simulated crisis. Additionally, the center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation offers students an opportunity to pursue a certificate in a specific IP-related field.
\nIU McKinney’s IP clinic focuses on helping companies create a better world through their innovations. Students can also take part in an externship at the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis. Some students also choose to participate in a seminar focusing on Comparative National Security Law, which offers a hands-on experience in counter-terrorism. The school also works with the Lilly and Company headquarters in Indianapolis.
\nThe IP clinic at IU McKinney School of Law is affiliated with Purdue University and the Center for Intellectual Property Research. The Center for IP Research has a mission to promote study of all areas of intellectual property law and copyright. Students may also choose to take a course in health law and participate in the Health Law Society.
\nIn addition to IP clinics, the school offers a variety of courses. While there is no requirement to focus on a specific area of law, students can focus on a variety of areas to get more practice experience. For example, students can pursue a JD/MBA or JD/MPA in accountancy, JD/MA in journalism, and JD/MS in Russian and East European studies. Students may also opt to earn joint degrees with other law schools.
\nThe IU clinic is one of many law schools certified by the USPTO to provide free patent filing assistance to eligible inventors. Students from participating law schools work under the supervision of an approved supervising attorney to provide services to qualified clients. The clinic is a practical setting for students to learn the legal aspects of patent and trademark prosecution. Students work directly with inventors and respond to office actions.
\nIn addition to the patent clinic, the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University has launched the Center for Intellectual Property Research, which has expanded its reach into the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne. The clinic offers a wide range of IP counseling services and is USPTO-certified to assist Indiana residents with trademark and patent applications.
\nThe USPTO is currently accepting nominations for its annual National Medal of Technology and Innovation award. The medal is the nation’s highest honor for technological achievement and is presented by the president. Those eligible for the award should have annual incomes under 300% of the federal poverty level, which is $13,590.
\nThe IU clinic is certified by the USPTO to provide free patent filing assistance to entrepreneurs and inventors in Indiana. The clinic matches a law school professor with an inventor in need and supervises them throughout the assistance process. Additionally, it offers nationwide assistance to applicants who live outside of the state of their law school.
